Although we have long understood Earth's Position in space, the unique nature of our planet was not fully appreciated untill we were able to look at our home from some distance. The astronauts aboard the Apollo 8 spacecraft were the first people to travel to the moon and were the first to glimpse our home planet from distant space. This view of Earth, commonly known as "Earthrise," was one of the most well-known images of the twentieth century.
